Notary Services at the Public Library

Many U.S. public libraries offer notary public services — often free or for a small fee, usually by appointment. Here is what a library notary can do, what to bring, and a verified, state-by-state list of libraries that offer notary service.

A notary public verifies your identity and witnesses your signature on documents such as affidavits, powers of attorney and permission letters. At many public libraries this service is free or low-cost for the community — you bring the unsigned document and a valid photo ID, and the notary watches you sign.

How it works

  1. Call ahead or book an appointment. Notaries are not always on duty. Confirm hours and whether you need an appointment before you go.
  2. Bring the unsigned document. Do not sign it beforehand — the notary must witness your signature in person.
  3. Bring valid photo ID. A current, government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID or passport) is required.
  4. Sign in front of the notary. The notary verifies your ID, watches you sign, then stamps and records the notarization.
  5. Pay any fee. Many libraries notarize for free; others charge a small per-signature fee set by state law.

Good to know

A library notary can handle most everyday documents, but there are limits. Notaries generally cannot give legal advice, and some documents (for example certain wills or immigration paperwork) may need a lawyer or a specialized official. A U.S. notary is not the same as a Latin-American “notario,” who is an attorney. When in doubt, call the library first and ask whether they can notarize your specific document.

FAQ

Is notary service at the library free?

Often, yes. Many public libraries notarize documents free for residents, while others charge a small fee per signature set by state law (for example a few dollars each). The library page for each location notes its policy — always confirm before you go.

Do I need an appointment for a library notary?

Usually. A notary is not always on duty, so most libraries ask you to call ahead or book an appointment. Some larger libraries offer walk-in notary hours on set days. Check the specific library’s page or call to confirm.

What should I bring to be notarized?

Bring the complete but unsigned document and a valid, government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, state ID or passport). Do not sign the document in advance — the notary must watch you sign. If your document needs witnesses, ask whether the library can provide them.

What can’t a library notary do?

A notary verifies identity and witnesses signatures; they cannot give legal advice or prepare legal documents. Some libraries decline certain items such as wills, deeds or immigration forms, or documents where a party is not present. When unsure, call ahead and describe your document.

Does the whole family or all signers need to be there?

Everyone whose signature is being notarized must be present with photo ID at the time of signing. A notary cannot notarize a signature for someone who is not there, even a spouse or relative.
