Acushnet Public Library

The Acushnet Public Library — formerly the Russell Memorial Library — was built in 1930 with funds bequeathed by George Taber Russell, an Acushnet native who wanted to give his hometown both a library and a war memorial. Ninety-five years later it continues that mission from 232 Middle Road, offering a fine-free lending collection, museum passes, notary service, and access to the statewide SAILS digital network.

📖 About Acushnet Public Library

The Acushnet Public Library at 232 Middle Road is Acushnet's sole public library, serving a SouthCoast Massachusetts community of roughly 10,000 residents. When George Taber Russell of Acushnet died in 1921, his estate directed that a portion of his bequest fund a public library and a war memorial for the town; construction began in 1930 and the Russell Memorial Library opened that year. The building at 88 Main Street still stands — the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument stands in front of it — while the current library operates at the Middle Road address. Today the library participates in the SAILS Library Network, a consortium that lets cardholders borrow from member libraries across southeastern Massachusetts and check out materials through the shared SirsiDynix catalog. The library's collection is fine-free, and its services extend from study rooms and a children's room to museum passes for local cultural institutions and notary public assistance.
