About Johnson City Public Library

The Johnson City Public Library traces its roots to May 1, 1895, when the Monday Club — a local women's education group — opened a subscription library with 45 charter members. The library became fully public in 1923 under the name the Mayne Williams Public Library. The current facility at 100 West Millard Street opened its doors on August 10, 1999. Built by the Barker Building Company at a cost of $9 million, the 42,000-square-foot building stands as one of the premier public libraries in the Tri-Cities region of Northeast Tennessee.

The library holds over 136,000 physical items including books, audiobooks, magazines, and DVDs. Digital offerings include access to Tennessee R.E.A.D.S. with over 275,000 titles and Hoopla digital with more than 850,000 digital books, comics, music, movies, and TV shows. Free public computers, Wi-Fi, programming for all ages, and dedicated local history collections make it a vital community resource.
