📖 About Robinson-Carpenter Memorial Library

Robinson-Carpenter Memorial Library stands at 104 South Leflore Avenue in Cleveland, the largest city in Bolivar County and home to Delta State University in the Mississippi Delta. The library's origin traces to 1917, when the Madame Hodnett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution established a public library in Cleveland. After librarian and community figure Mae Robinson was tragically killed in 1959, the Robinson family donated funds for the construction of a purpose-built memorial library in her honor; it was formally dedicated on July 2, 1961. The building expanded through three phases by 1979 and today serves as headquarters of the multi-branch Bolivar County Library System. Its Mississippi Room houses the county's most extensive genealogy and local history collection — including The Bolivar Commercial on microfilm (with continuous issues from May 1934), marriage records from 1866 through 1917, and specialized Mound Bayou resources — making it the primary research destination for Delta family history. The library also provides notary services, talking book services for eligible patrons, and free access to MAGNOLIA statewide databases.
