EVPL traces its origins to 1848, when Vanderburgh County first made books available through the county auditor's office in downtown Evansville. The East Branch opened in 1913, beginning the system's expansion across the county. Today EVPL operates eight branch locations — Central, East, West, McCollough, North Park, Oaklyn, Red Bank, and Stringtown — serving a population of nearly 180,000 residents across Vanderburgh County. The system holds more than 950,000 items, circulates nearly 3 million items annually, and employs 186 staff members. Library Journal has awarded EVPL its prestigious five-star rating, placing it in the nation's top 1% for libraries of its population size.
