About Public-Libraries.com

A free, independent directory helping Americans find and use their local public library.

What this site is

Public-Libraries.com is a free, independent directory of public libraries across the United States. For each library we publish the essentials people actually need — address, phone, real opening hours, the services offered, and the free digital resources a library card unlocks — organised by state, county and city so you can find the branch nearest you.

Our mission

Public libraries are one of the best free resources in any community, but their information is often scattered across dated municipal pages and hard-to-search catalogs. Our goal is simple: make it effortless for anyone to find their local library and understand what it offers — at no cost.

Who is behind it

Public-Libraries.com is maintained by an independent editorial team. We are not affiliated with any library, library system, or government agency. We are a small, reader-supported project that researches and compiles library information from official sources — see exactly how we verify our data.

How the directory is built

Our master list of libraries is based on the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Public Libraries Survey, the official U.S. federal dataset, which identifies more than 17,000 public library outlets nationwide. On top of that foundation we research each library individually against its own official website and catalog to add verified hours, services and local detail. Coverage grows continuously.

How we're funded

The site is reader-supported through advertising. Advertising never influences which libraries we list or what we say about them — every listing is compiled the same way, from the same public sources.
