📖 About Lied Scottsbluff Public Library
Scottsbluff's library traces its roots to 1910, when local citizens donated books for a reading room in a downtown church. By 1916 the collection had over 1,000 volumes and 351 registered borrowers. In 1917 the city secured a $12,500 Carnegie Corporation grant — later increased to $15,000 — and the landmark Neo-Classical Carnegie Library opened on April 21, 1922, at First Avenue and 18th Street (now the West Nebraska Arts Center, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places). A 1936 addition expanded the Carnegie building; then in 1966 the library moved to a new facility at the north end of Central Park, with approximately 30,000 volumes transferred in just four days. The modern era began in March 2010 when a $4.1 million expansion broke ground, with the Lied Foundation contributing $600,000 to create the children's and teen sections — an act of generosity that gave the library its current name. Today the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library holds over 51,000 items including books, CDs, DVDs, Playaways, puzzles, and board games. Its MakerHub features a laser cutter, 3D printer, die-cut machines, and sewing machines available for public use. A public notary is available Monday–Friday 9 am–5 pm.
