The Allerton Public Library serves the Wayne County town of Allerton, which was platted by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1870 and became a legal town in 1874. The library occupies the Centennial Building at 103 South Central Avenue, a landmark in a community that once boasted a peak population of 1,600 during its railroad-division heyday. Today serving a population of around 430, the library holds more than 10,000 volumes covering fiction, nonfiction, large print, audiobooks, and videos.
