📖 About Chester County Library
The Chester County Library traces its reading tradition to the 1898 Palmetto Literary Club, one of the oldest organized library efforts in the South Carolina Upcountry. The modern county library was formally established in 1946 through the merger of the Chester Free Library and the Chester County Circulating Library, and in December 1950 it moved into the War Memorial Building — a brick community center erected to honor Chester County's military veterans. Today's home at 100 Center Street houses the system's flagship services: a circulating collection of more than 112,000 items serving roughly 33,000 county residents, the non-circulating S. Lewis Bell Room for local history and genealogy research, and a full slate of children, teen, and adult programs. Chester County Library belongs to SC LENDS, a statewide shared-catalog consortium of more than 30 South Carolina public libraries, letting cardholders request materials from across the state within days.
