📖 About Albany Public Library

The Albany Public Library serves this Willamette Valley city of about 56,000 from two locations. Its roots reach back to 1911, when Andrew Carnegie offered Albany $12,500 to build a free library on the condition the city match it; S.E. and Mrs. Young donated the land at Third Avenue and Ferry Street, and the Downtown Carnegie Library was dedicated on June 26, 1914, after volunteers carried in a 3,200-volume collection led by Mrs. Young herself with a Bible. That Carnegie building has served as a library ever since and today holds a Historic Preservation collection and a lower-level Children's Room. In 1973, aided by a one-acre site and $200,000 from Fred Meyer and the Fred Meyer Foundation matched by an Oregon State Library federal grant, the city built the 17,000-sq-ft Main Library on 14th Avenue SE. In 2012 Albany joined Lebanon and Linn-Benton Community College on a shared Evergreen catalog that grew into the Linn Libraries Consortium, so one card now works across all member libraries.
