📖 About Auburn Hills Public Library
Auburn Hills Public Library traces its building's origins to the late 1920s, when Wesson Seyburn — husband of Winifred Dodge, eldest daughter of auto baron John Dodge — commissioned architect Robert O. Derrick to design a modest worker's home on what would become Seyburn Drive. In 1939, Annette Brunette purchased the property and transformed it in the Greek Revival style, adding built-in shelves still visible in today's reading room. After Seyburn's death, the former Dodge Estate was subdivided; the City of Auburn Hills acquired the Brunette House, relocated it, and renovated it for public use — hosting a grand opening as a library on April 22, 1990. A 1995–1996 expansion added 13,700 square feet to the original structure and earned the AIA Michigan Design Honor Award in 1998. The Auburn Hills Historical Society, founded in 1993, maintains its archives in the library's lower level, preserving records and photographs of a city that incorporated only in 1983. Beloved mascot Reed the Bookasaurus Jr. hatched here after a decades-long mystery involving a recovered time capsule.
