📖 About Aldrich Public Library

The Aldrich Public Library is the public library of Barre, Vermont — the self-styled 'Granite Capital of the World' in Washington County. Barre's library tradition dates to 1855, when small book collections appeared in local stores, and the Barre Library Association was formally chartered on December 8, 1873. The current building was funded by the estate of Leonard Frost Aldrich and dedicated in 1908 as a $39,000 Classical Revival structure of gray brick on a granite foundation, designed by Penn Varney. Its carved stone frieze depicts 'The Passing of the Torch of Learning,' and the main floor retains original oak furniture, classical columns, fireplaces, and a distinctive opaque-glass floor over the rear book stacks. A second-floor gallery was added in 1984 and a children's room was created in the basement. Today the library holds over 60,000 books and eBooks, houses one of Vermont's finest ethnic-heritage collections in its Vermont Room, and operates a fine-free policy. It also runs a York Branch in East Barre (134 Mill Street, (802) 476-5118, open Tue & Thu 12–4pm and Sat 10am–1pm). Services include notary public, museum and state park passes, 3D printing, and book delivery.
