📖 About Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library

Dalton, Georgia (pop. 34,417) earned its nickname "Carpet Capital of the World" when teenager Catherine Evans Whitener created a hand-tufted bedspread as a wedding gift in 1895, eventually sparking an industry that today produces more than 90% of the world's functional carpet within 65 miles of the city. The public library was opened in 1924 with a collection of just 400 books donated by the Senior Dalton Woman's Club, housed initially in Robert Loveman's residence known as "The Robin's Nest." In 1948 the collection relocated to the W.C. Martin House, and the current building at 310 Cappes Street was constructed in 1982. The library serves as the headquarters branch of the Northwest Georgia Regional Library System, established in 1945 when Dalton and Ringgold first pooled resources for state aid; Gordon County joined in 1957 and Murray County in 1958. The system joined Georgia's PINES statewide catalog network in 2010, opening access to nearly 300 library collections across the state.
