📖 About Fort Myers Beach Public Library
The Fort Myers Beach Public Library opened on September 25, 1955, with 1,200 books in a tiny cottage at 1698 Estero Boulevard, after Ruth Healy and the Beach Women's Club secured start-up funding. The following year it became the first free public library in Lee County. After outgrowing two successive locations, the library's board of directors established an independent library tax district in 1965 — an overwhelming yes vote of 678 to 32. A 1993–1994 renovation created the current three-story facility, and expansions from 2011 to 2013 increased monthly use by more than 50 percent. By 2014 the collection had grown to 88,200 print and audiovisual titles plus 52 electronic databases and a growing eBook catalog. The ground floor and elevator sustained flooding damage from Hurricane Ian (2022) and again from Hurricanes Helene and Milton (2024); the library has continued operating throughout recovery. The Friends of the Library operate an in-house used-book store (Bookstore line: 239-233-8447). Notary services are available free for cardholders in good standing ($3 for non-cardholders) — call ahead to confirm availability. The library also features a sand castle display on the third floor, wooden ship model exhibits, a Reading Room, and a community doll collection.
