Canton Public Library traces its origins to 1913, when a $10,000 Andrew Carnegie grant funded the construction of a brick-and-sandstone library in this Lincoln County seat, designed by Huron architect George Issenhuth and built by Satrum Brothers. That original Carnegie building at 225 E. 4th Street — now listed on the National Register of Historic Places (listed December 6, 2016) and operating today as a day care center — launched over a century of public library service. The library now makes its home at 225 North Broadway Street, one block north of the Lincoln County Courthouse. With a collection of more than 33,000 volumes and nearly 50,000 annual circulations, it serves Canton's community of about 3,000 residents and is the independent municipal library for Lincoln County, participating in the South Dakota Interlibrary Loan program and the statewide South Dakota Titles to Go OverDrive consortium.
