📖 About Adelia McConnell Russell Library
The library traces its roots to June 1921, when the Alexander City Tuesday Study Club established the town's first reading room inside the Masonic Building. The City of Alexander City took over operations in 1942, moving the collection to the courthouse before settling at its permanent home on Church Street. The library is named for Adelia Willis McConnell Russell, a civic advocate whose commitment to lifelong learning helped shape the institution's growth through the twentieth century. Today the building includes Mamie's Place Children's Library — a dedicated youth wing with its own phone line (256-409-7015) — offering story time, early literacy collections, and children's programming. Part of the nine-branch Horseshoe Bend Regional Library System serving Coosa, Elmore, Lee, and Tallapoosa counties, the library circulates more than 56,000 items annually to a community of approximately 14,600 residents.
