📖 About Gravesend Library

Gravesend Library opened on August 13, 1962, bringing public library service to this southern Brooklyn neighborhood whose origins date to a 17th-century Dutch settlement — the only town in New York State founded by a woman, Lady Deborah Moody, in 1643. In 2001 the branch underwent a $1.5 million renovation covering new lighting, furniture, shelving, and public computers. The branch closed again in March 2025 to install a new heating and cooling system and address infrastructure repairs, and celebrated its grand reopening on September 22, 2026. The split-level interior provides a dedicated children's floor and a separate young-adult seating area, while large collections of Russian, Chinese, and other multilingual materials reflect the neighborhood's waves of immigrant communities.
