📖 About Sunset Park Library

Sunset Park Library's history on 4th Avenue stretches back to December 9, 1905, when it opened as the South Branch in a Classical Revival building designed by Lord & Hewlett and funded by Andrew Carnegie. That original building was demolished in 1970 and replaced by a 1972 structure that, over the decades, became too small and too costly to maintain. In November 2023, the branch reopened in a completely new two-story, 20,000-square-foot facility — twice the size of its predecessor — at the base of an eight-story mixed-use building developed in partnership with the Fifth Avenue Committee, which added 50 units of genuinely affordable housing on the upper floors. The new library houses the largest dedicated teen space of any BPL branch in Brooklyn, a recording studio, a community program room, and a tutoring room, serving the neighborhood's vibrant Latino and Chinese-American communities.

When did the original Sunset Park Library open, and was it a Carnegie library?
The original library opened December 9, 1905, as the South Branch, in a Classical Revival building funded by Andrew Carnegie and designed by architects Lord & Hewlett. That Carnegie building was demolished in 1970 and replaced by a 1972 structure, which itself was replaced by the current 2023 building.
What special facilities does the new Sunset Park Library have?
The 2023 building features the largest dedicated teen space of any Brooklyn Public Library branch, a recording studio, a tutoring room, and a community program room that can be reserved for outside events beyond regular library hours.
