Fort Hamilton Library

Fort Hamilton Library is one of Brooklyn's earliest Carnegie libraries, a 1906 red-brick gem designed by Lord and Hewlett that has anchored the Bay Ridge community for more than 120 years. Its modest but dignified design — with horizontal black brick courses, dentilled cornice, and limestone surround — reflects the civic idealism that drove Carnegie's public library program.

📖 About Fort Hamilton Library

Fort Hamilton Library traces its origins to the 1890s, when Mrs. Gelston of Shore Road donated a personal book collection to establish the Fort Hamilton Free Library for Bay Ridge residents. Andrew Carnegie's 1901 gift to Brooklyn enabled the construction of a permanent building, which opened in 1906 at 9424 Fourth Avenue — making it one of Brooklyn's first purpose-built Carnegie libraries. Designed by architects Lord and Hewlett, the two-story brick structure features red brick cladding accented with horizontal black brick courses, a dentilled cornice, limestone window sills, and a limestone doorway surround. The branch underwent a $3.3-million restoration completed in March 2011, which addressed extensive termite damage discovered during the project and returned the building to full operation.
