📖 About Kensington Library

Kensington Library began as a deposit station of 400 books opened in January 1908 through the efforts of the Mother's Kindergarten Club of PS 134 and the Kensington Improvement League. It achieved full branch status in 1910 and spent nearly five decades at 771 McDonald Avenue before moving in 1960 to a former catering hall known as "the Manor" on Ditmas Avenue — a renovation that made national news as the first BPL branch to install air conditioning. In November 2012, delayed two weeks by Hurricane Sandy, the branch opened its current 18,500-square-foot, two-story home at 4207 18th Avenue — the first entirely new BPL branch building in Brooklyn in years. The Art Commission of the City of New York recognized the project for its successful fusion of green design, self-checkout technology, and dedicated spaces for children, pre-teens, teens, and adults.
