The Pacific Library holds a foundational place in Brooklyn Public Library history as the first of the borough's Carnegie-funded branches to open to the public, welcoming readers on October 8, 1904. Designed by architect Raymond F. Almirall — who would go on to shape BPL's Park Slope and Eastern Parkway branches — the building presents a dignified Beaux-Arts face of brick with prominent limestone trim, including keystones above its arched door and window openings. Contemporary observers praised its light, air, and efficient use of space, and the branch retains its original two-story book stacks. Almirall's design was influential enough to help set the tone for the wave of Carnegie branch libraries that followed across Brooklyn. Though widely cherished and the subject of a spirited community campaign when a 2013 redevelopment proposal threatened it, the branch is notably not a designated New York City landmark.
