📖 About Gerritsen Beach Library

The Gerritsen Beach Library first opened on January 29, 1932 at 305 Gerritsen Avenue with a collection of 3,000 books. After decades in cramped quarters, the branch moved in 1997 to its current 10,000-square-foot home designed by John Ciardullo Associates, positioned between Marine Park and the head of Shell Bank Canal. The building's distinctive arched entranceway, clock tower, and exposed heavy-timber trusses frame a dramatic peaked ceiling and a full-story window overlooking the waterway. After suffering flood damage in Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the library was repaired and reopened in 2013. Most recently, a $2.4 million renovation — finished six months ahead of schedule and $300,000 under budget — restored the roof, masonry, and parapets; the branch celebrated its grand reopening on December 11, 2025.
