📖 About Kings Highway Library

Kings Highway Library began as an unstaffed deposit station in a shoe store in 1910, moving through a frame shack on Kings Highway and other temporary homes before the community's demand made a permanent building essential. On October 12, 1954, the branch opened in its current building at 2115 Ocean Avenue, designed by Knapp and Johnson and constructed by the New York City Department of Public Works — making it the first branch library ever built in Brooklyn by the City of New York. A four-year renovation completed June 11, 2009, added 2,000 square feet, an elevator, and self-check technology. The branch has one of the highest circulation rates in the BPL system and serves a multilingual community that includes large Russian, Chinese, and South Asian populations.
