📖 About Bushwick Library

Bushwick Library opened in 1903 in the rented ground floor of a church at Montrose Avenue and Humboldt Street, then moved to its permanent Carnegie-funded home at 340 Bushwick Avenue on December 16, 1908. The two-story brick building was designed by Raymond F. Almirall in the Classical Revival style, featuring a projecting entrance bay with fluted Ionic columns, a limestone frieze inscribed "Brooklyn Public Library," and decorative banded brickwork — all on a generous 100×100-foot lot. Andrew Carnegie's 1901 gift to Brooklyn funded the branch as part of a wave of civic construction responding to the neighborhood's rapid immigrant-era growth. The building has served Bushwick continuously for more than 115 years and remains an important fixture at the heart of the community.
