Mill Basin Library
Mill Basin Library has served the Canarsie-Flatlands community since 1940, when it first opened in the back of a neighborhood pharmacy — the determination of local residents eventually earned the branch its own modern building on Ralph Avenue in 1974. 📖 About Mill Basin Library
Mill Basin Library first opened in 1940 as a deposit station inside the Austin Pharmacy on Avenue T, born from the advocacy of the local Mill Basin community. Through years of persistent effort, residents secured a purpose-built modern brick building on Ralph Avenue, which the branch has occupied since October 1974. Located in the Canarsie-Flatlands section of Brooklyn, near the waters of Jamaica Bay and Floyd Bennett Field, the branch serves a community of Caribbean, Irish, Italian, Jewish, and Russian residents and is close to two elementary schools, one intermediate school, and six private or religious schools.
