📖 About Park Slope Library

The Park Slope Library was designed by architect Raymond F. Almirall and built in 1905–1906 as one of the Brooklyn branches funded through Andrew Carnegie's 1901 contract to erect free public libraries across the borough. Originally opened as the Prospect Branch, it was renamed the Park Slope Branch in 1975. The Classical Revival building is faced in brick and stone with a central entrance portico framed by Doric columns and tall double-height windows, and its interior retains original stained glass windows, an arched stained glass ceiling, wood paneling, and marble and mosaic floors. A major rehabilitation between 1978 and 1981 replaced the mechanical systems while preserving these historic features, and the branch reopened in June 1981 with new furnishings alongside its restored paneling and fireplaces. Today it is a designated New York City individual landmark and remains an active neighborhood branch of the independent Brooklyn Public Library system.
