📖 About Pelham Parkway-Van Nest Library

The Pelham Parkway-Van Nest branch traces its origins to 1912, when NYPL's Travelling Libraries program brought books to this neighborhood before a permanent branch existed. A Van Nest sub-branch opened in 1917 and moved through a series of progressively larger storefront locations before relocating to its present single-story building in 1968. The library was renamed Pelham Parkway-Van Nest in 2014 to reflect the broader community it serves. The branch sits near the Lydig Avenue shopping district in Van Nest, a working-class neighborhood that takes its name from the 19th-century Van Nest railroad station. In 2025–2026, the branch underwent a $5 million HVAC replacement project to improve climate control for patrons. The building features a glass-enclosed community room and maintains extensive World Languages collections for the neighborhood's diverse population.
