📖 About Tremont Library

The Tremont Library opened in 1905 as one of 65 New York City branch libraries funded by Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie and designed by the celebrated architectural firm Carrère and Hastings in the Italian Renaissance style. It stands on the corner of Washington Avenue and East 176th Street, one block south of East Tremont Avenue, in a neighborhood whose name—invented by a 19th-century postmaster from the three nearby hills of Mount Eden, Mount Hope, and Fairmount—is itself a piece of Bronx lore. Today the branch serves a predominantly Dominican and Puerto Rican community and houses a Sound Lab multimedia recording space alongside its historic reading rooms.
