📖 About Throgs Neck Library

Throgs Neck Library opened in September 1974 to serve the Throgs Neck peninsula in the southeastern Bronx, a neighborhood whose name traces to English settler John Throckmorton, who arrived in 1642. The area was the site of the Battle of Throgs Neck in October 1776, when British forces under General Howe attempted to outflank General Washington's troops at this strategic passage between the East River and Long Island Sound. The one-floor, fully accessible branch is situated near the intersection of East Tremont Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway Extension, and features a distinctive large mural celebrating Sesame Street on the north wall of the courtyard near the children's room — a landmark of its own in the local streetscape.
