📖 About West Belmont Branch
The West Belmont Branch stands on Narragansett Avenue near the boundary of the Montclare and Belmont Cragin community areas, a corner of Chicago's Northwest Side that transitioned from European immigrant families in the early twentieth century to a predominantly Hispanic community today. The branch opened in 1971 to serve a densely populated residential neighborhood — roughly 14,000 people per square mile — that grew up around bungalows and two-flats along Belmont Avenue's historic commercial corridor. Its multilingual collections in Arabic (children's), Polish, and Spanish make it an unusually inclusive resource for the diverse Northwest Side. Monthly programming includes a LEGO Club, story time, film screenings, and Polish heritage cultural events.
