📖 About Hegewisch Branch

Dedicated December 7, 1991, the Hegewisch Branch sits at the far southeastern tip of Chicago in a neighborhood that traces its roots to the industrial vision of Adolph Hegewisch, president of the U.S. Rolling Stock Company, who laid out a model workers' community along railroad lines in 1883. The branch displays four public artworks commissioned through Chicago's Percent for Art Ordinance, including two watercolors by Judy Ledgerwood ("Composition in Grey and Black" and "Composition in Red"), a sculpture titled "Cleat" by Neil Goodman, a painting by Richard Hull, and a drawing by David Kroll. The branch serves a diverse, predominantly Latino neighborhood bordered by the Calumet River and, to the east, the Indiana state line.
