Rudy Lozano (1951–1983) grew up in Pilsen after his family relocated from Harlingen, Texas, and went on to organize low-wage immigrant garment workers for the ILGWU while mobilizing Latino voters in the campaign that elected Harold Washington as Chicago's first African-American mayor. He was shot in his home on June 8, 1983, and is remembered as a pivotal figure in both the labor and Latino civil-rights movements. The branch named in his honor serves the Lower West Side, home to one of the most vibrant Mexican-American communities in the Midwest.
