<p>Melcher Neighborhood Library serves Pecan Park, an East End community that grew out of a pecan orchard land platted beginning in 1926, with most of its modest brick homes built in the 1930s&ndash;1940s. Today the super neighborhood is home to roughly 16,000 residents and is more than 92% Hispanic, just west of Ingrando Park and its Dixie Little League fields. The library is named after Lucile Yvonne Melcher, described by Houston Public Library as &ldquo;a native Houstonian and beloved philanthropist,&rdquo; whose generosity supported civic life in the city. Note: the branch is open Monday&ndash;Thursday only; it is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.</p>
