📖 About McCrane-Kashmere Gardens Neighborhood Library

Designed by Don J. Tomasco and Associates and opened on November 16, 1971, this Pardee Street branch honors Dr. Eva Alice McCrane — an educator who earned dual doctorates (Doctor of Business Education and Doctor of Education) and devoted thirty years to Houston ISD schools between 1945 and 1978, while also reporting for the Houston Informer and volunteering with HPL's Summer Reading Program for decades. Hurricane Harvey heavily damaged the facility in 2017; after a multi-year renovation, it reopened on January 11, 2021 with updated finishes, expanded technology access, new community areas, and a virtual grand celebration hosted by Mayor Sylvester Turner and HPL Director Rhea Brown Lawson. In September 2024, the branch added a Family Place room as part of Houston Public Library's family learning space initiative, deepening its role as a cornerstone resource in the Kashmere Gardens community.
