<p>Stanaker Neighborhood Library sits on S Sgt Macario Garcia Drive, named for Staff Sergeant Macario Garc&iacute;a (1920&ndash;1972), the first Mexican immigrant to receive the Medal of Honor, who settled in the Houston area after World War II and worked as a Veterans&rsquo; Administration counselor for 25 years. The branch itself honors Nena E. Stanaker, a civic leader who &mdash; according to Houston Public Library &mdash; &ldquo;served her neighborhood tirelessly for more than fifty years&rdquo; and was &ldquo;fondly known among her many friends as the &lsquo;Mayor of the East End.&rsquo;&rdquo; The library serves Houston&rsquo;s East End, one of the city&rsquo;s most historically significant Latino districts, where two of Houston&rsquo;s oldest Hispanic neighborhoods, Second Ward and Magnolia Park, define the civic landscape.</p>
