📖 About Flores Neighborhood Library

Flores Neighborhood Library sits in the Second Ward, a historic district of Houston’s East End where Mexican Americans have formed the majority since the 1920s and where Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church — the first Mexican ethnic Catholic parish in Houston — still anchors the community. The branch takes its name from Archbishop Patricio F. Flores (1929–2017), a Texas-born son of migrant farmworkers who became the first Mexican American elevated to the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in the United States when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio in 1970. He was later appointed Archbishop of San Antonio, a post he held until 2004, and was a tireless advocate for Houston’s Hispanic community throughout his ministry. A virtual tour of the branch is available through HPL’s website.
