📖 About African American History Research Center at the Gregory School

The white-brick Edgar M. Gregory School opened in 1926 in Freedmen's Town, Houston's Fourth Ward — a community established by formerly enslaved people after the Civil War — and served as a K–8 school until 1980. Named for Union Army officer and Freedmen's Bureau Assistant Commissioner Edgar M. Gregory, the building was designated a State Archaeological Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission in 1995. After standing vacant for nearly three decades, the school was transformed into a library through an $11 million restoration funded by federal community development block grants and city contributions; the renovated facility opened on November 14, 2009. Renamed the African American History Research Center in fall 2022, it holds personal and professional papers of African American Houstonians, oral history recordings, photographs, and digitized collections including the Christia Adair Collection — all accessible in person and online through HPL's digital archive.
