The Light Street Branch is one of the Enoch Pratt Free Library's oldest branches, first established on February 27, 1886 — just days after the Pratt system launched — to serve the dense rowhouse neighborhoods of South Baltimore. Today the branch occupies a building at 1251 Light Street and Ostend Street that dates to 1971, situated near the Cross Street Market in the heart of Federal Hill. The branch serves a broad swath of South Baltimore including Federal Hill, Locust Point, and Riverside Park. It provides dedicated children's and teen sections, community and meeting rooms that can be reserved for local gatherings, free Wi-Fi and public computers, and a variety of programs from baby storytime to American Mah Jongg.
