📖 About Central Library
Central Library opened its doors on Cathedral Street in January 1933, designed by Baltimore architects Clyde and Nelson Friz working with New York library specialists Edward Tilton and Alfred Githens. Its designers rejected the intimidating, mausoleum-like public libraries of the era in favor of a welcoming, sidewalk-level entrance and a row of ten-foot department-store-style exhibit windows meant to draw passersby inside. In 1971 the Maryland General Assembly designated Central as the State Library Resource Center, giving every Maryland resident access to its unusually deep collections. After an award-winning renovation topping $115 million, the building reopened in September 2019, restoring its historic character while adding upgraded technology and space for community programs. Today the library houses the Job & Career Information Center and hosts Social Worker and Lawyer in the Library services. Free public tours let visitors explore the restored central hall and its landmark show windows.
