Founded through a gift by Baltimore merchant Enoch Pratt in 1882 — who pledged a central library, four branch libraries, and a $1 million endowment with the words "My library shall be for all, rich and poor without distinction of race or color" — the Enoch Pratt Free Library opened its doors on January 4, 1886, with five branches operating simultaneously.
