The Canton Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library opened on February 15, 1886 — the same historic day the library system launched simultaneously with its Central Library and four branch locations. Located at the corner of Ellwood Avenue and O'Donnell Street in Southeast Baltimore, it has served the waterfront neighborhoods of Canton, Highlandtown, and Brewers Hill for nearly 140 years. The current building underwent a comprehensive renovation that was completed in 2016, updating its infrastructure and public spaces while preserving its role as an anchor of community life in these historically working-class neighborhoods. Today it provides dedicated children's and teen sections, community and meeting rooms available for reservation, self check-out stations, and a full suite of digital resources through the Enoch Pratt system — including Libby, Kanopy, and dozens of research databases. As part of the Pratt system, a Canton card also unlocks the Maryland statewide Sailor network and Digital Maryland collections.
