📖 About Canton Branch
The Canton Branch opened its doors on February 15, 1886 at Ellwood Avenue and O'Donnell Street, part of the founding quartet of neighborhood branches designed for the newly established Enoch Pratt Free Library. It sits in the heart of Canton and serves the surrounding Highlandtown and Brewers Hill neighborhoods, once dense with rowhouses built for the workers of Baltimore's waterfront canneries and packing houses. The building was restored in 1984 and then given a comprehensive four-year renovation completed in 2016, which added an ADA-accessible entrance, a reworked floor plan, and updated technology while keeping the branch rooted in its original block. Today it offers free Wi-Fi, public computers, printing, and dedicated children's and teen sections. A community meeting room is available for reservation, and staff run job- and career-assistance programming. Self check-out lets patrons move through the branch quickly during busy after-school and evening hours.
