📖 About Lake Geneva Public Library
The Lake Geneva Public Library traces its founding to 1894, when Mary Delafield Sturges donated a wooden house on the current site to serve as a free reading room at the urging of community leader James Simmons. For six decades the library operated in that cottage before the city commissioned architect James Dresser — a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright — to design a permanent building; the current structure was dedicated December 12, 1954, with wide windows deliberately oriented to offer patrons views of Geneva Lake. Renovations in 2021–2022 refreshed the building while preserving Dresser's signature modernist aesthetic. Today the library is a member of the South Central Library System (SCLS) and serves Walworth County patrons with strong collections in local and regional history, six Museum Adventure experience passes, notary services, and a Piggly Wiggly branch location in downtown Lake Geneva for added convenience. Book lockers available 24/7 outside the main entrance allow patrons to pick up holds any time, day or night.
