📖 About Southwest Branch

The Southwest Branch opened in 1961, one of several new libraries funded by Seattle's voter-approved 1956 bond issue that extended library service to postwar residential neighborhoods in the city's outer reaches. Situated in the West Seattle corridor near 35th Ave. S.W., the building serves a working-class and increasingly diverse area of single-family homes and small businesses. The interior features earth tones and light-colored wood throughout, and the walls bear words engraved from community input — a design touch that connects the building to the specific voices of the people who use it. The branch holds a Spanish language collection and carries the Safe Place designation.
