Capitol Hill Branch
Opened in 2003 under Seattle's Libraries for All bond program, the Capitol Hill Branch replaced the 1954 Henry Branch with a striking triangular reading room whose glass walls and living vertical garden make it feel like a quiet urban greenhouse tucked one block off Broadway. The branch holds one of SPL's most notable specialty collections: over 1,500 LGBTQ+ titles spanning fiction, poetry, graphic novels, and biography from a global perspective.

📖 About Capitol Hill Branch
The Capitol Hill Branch opened in 2003, designed by Johnston Architects and Cutler Architects to replace the original 1954 Henry Branch on the same lively neighborhood. The building centers on a triangular reading room with glass walls to the north and south, and a vertical garden of evergreens and vines on stainless-steel mesh screens that filters natural light into the space. The triangular roofline appears to float above the reading room, giving the branch an airy, greenhouse quality that provides a deliberate contrast to the high energy of Broadway's commercial strip. The branch is a designated Safe Place, fully accessible, and served by the Capitol Hill Link light rail station and streetcar.
