Delridge Branch

Opened June 29, 2002, the Delridge Branch is one of a handful of Seattle Public Library locations built directly into a mixed-use residential building — the library occupies the entire first floor of a three-story apartment building with 19 housing units above. The Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association shaped its design, and the branch reflects southwest Seattle's linguistic diversity with dedicated Spanish and Vietnamese collections.

📖 About Delridge Branch

The Delridge Branch opened on June 29, 2002, funded by Seattle's 1998 Libraries for All bond measure and designed by Stickney Murphy Romine Architects. Construction began in May 2001, and the branch was built as a co-located community anchor: the library fills the ground floor of a three-story building that includes 19 residential units, a model that integrates library access directly into the neighborhood's housing fabric. The Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA) consulted on the design to ensure the space reflected community needs. The branch serves one of Seattle's most linguistically diverse neighborhoods; its collections include Spanish- and Vietnamese-language materials alongside English, and it provides dedicated children's and teen areas.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Delridge Branch located inside an apartment building?

The branch was deliberately co-located in a mixed-use building as part of a community-oriented design process. The Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association (DNDA) consulted on the project, and situating the library on the ground floor of a three-story residential building with 19 apartments above was seen as a way to embed library access into the daily life of the neighborhood.

Does Delridge Branch have materials in languages other than English?

Yes. The branch maintains collections in Spanish and Vietnamese, reflecting the languages most commonly spoken in the surrounding Delridge neighborhood of southwest Seattle.

When did Delridge get its first Seattle Public Library service?

The Delridge neighborhood first received SPL service in 1996 through a self-service station. The full branch at 5423 Delridge Way SW opened on June 29, 2002, following voter approval of the 1998 Libraries for All bond measure.
