📚 About Brooklyn Public Library

Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is the independent public library system serving all of Kings County — the borough of Brooklyn. Founded in 1892, BPL operates 59 locations across Brooklyn's neighborhoods. Its flagship Central Library at Grand Army Plaza opened in 1941, an Art Deco landmark whose bronze entrance doors depict scenes from American literature and history. Unlike Manhattan and Queens, which are served by the New York Public Library and Queens Public Library respectively, Brooklyn has its own fully independent library system supported by City of New York funding and governed by its own board.

BPL also operates the Center for Brooklyn History (formerly the Brooklyn Collection), a research archive at Clinton Hill housing maps, photographs, and records dating to the 17th century. Many branches occupy Carnegie-funded buildings: the Pacific Library (1904) was the first Carnegie library built in Brooklyn, and Stone Avenue Library (1914) was the first dedicated children's library in the United States.
