Plymouth District Library has served the City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township since 1923, growing from a branch of the Wayne County Library to a fully independent district library that moved in 1998 into its 42,000-square-foot building on South Main Street — recently renovated and expanded to 52,000 square feet — with a Technology Commons housing laser cutters, 3D printers, sewing machines and a Fix-It Station at the front door.

📖 About Plymouth District Library
Plymouth District Library opened in 1923 in the Plymouth Village Hall as a branch of the Wayne County Library system. The pivotal moment in its history came in 1947, when Bessie Dunning and her daughter Margaret donated the Burgess House at 223 South Main Street to the city — approved by 88 percent of voters — and the building was renamed the Dunning Library. In 1958, a renovation funded by the Edward C. Hough and Mary Hough Kimball Foundation created the Dunning-Hough Library with a colonial facade personally chosen by Mr. Hough. The library became an independent District Library in 1986 with its own voter-approved millage. Voters passed a $7.35 million bond in 1994, and in April 1998 the library opened its current 42,000-square-foot facility at 223 S. Main Street. A 2006–2007 expansion added 10,000 more square feet. Today Plymouth District Library serves Plymouth Township and the City of Plymouth and is open seven days a week.
