The Farmington Community Library serves the neighboring cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills from two branches; the Farmington Hills location at 32737 West 12 Mile Road is the system's main library. The library system traces to March 1913, when the Farmington Township board asked the Ladies Literary Society to "start a library," beginning with 800 books housed in a rented church classroom. The Farmington Hills building opened in June 1972 at 38,000 square feet on three floors, and a 2003 renovation added roughly 72,000 more square feet — a new commons area, computer lab and wireless access — and moved the entire Children's Department, with its Smart Start early-literacy center, to the lower level. Governed by an eight-member board of trustees split evenly between the two cities, the library is a member of The Library Network (TLN), sharing a regional catalog and the Michigan Activity Pass program.
