📖 About Salem-South Lyon District Library
The Salem-South Lyon District Library traces its roots to 1939, when it began as a single room stocked with donated books. In 1962 the community raised more than $8,000 to build a new library on West Lake Street, which opened in 1963 with shelf space for about 8,000 volumes. The library became a district library in 1993, expanding its service area to take in both the City of South Lyon and Salem Township, and in 1998 it moved into a new 15,000-square-foot building at 9800 Pontiac Trail, financed by a $2.5 million bond approved by voters in 1995. A $1.6 million expansion completed in January 2009 added teen space, more public computers, study rooms and a drive-up book drop with no tax increase, and a 2019 addition brought a larger children's wing and a community room. Today the library operates as a roughly 22,000-square-foot community hub and is a member of The Library Network (TLN), serving the City of South Lyon and Salem Township on the edge of Oakland and Washtenaw counties.
