Grand Rapids Public Library traces its roots to 1871, when the Board of Education merged collections from the Ladies Literary Association and the YMCA, with Frances Holcomb serving as the library's first librarian. The Main Library moved into the Ryerson Building in 1904, a Beaux-Arts structure featuring Indiana Bedford limestone, Italian Carrara marble steps, and hand-laid marble wainscoting throughout the interior. A major 1969 addition expanded service capacity before the 2003 renovation reunited the original atrium and skylight with a new Keeler wing, blending century-old grandeur with modern library amenities. Level 4 houses the Grand Rapids History Center, preserving the city's documentary heritage through archival collections and digital archives available free to researchers. The library operates eight branches across the city and offers a robust menu of digital services, notary assistance, and community programming for all ages.
