📖 About Yankee Clipper Branch

The story of Yankee Clipper Branch is unlike any other GRPL location. In 1970, a bookmobile named Yon was permanently parked at the Yankee Shopping Plaza on Leonard St NE, serving the northeast neighborhood from its wheels. After a stint in a temporary trailer, the permanent branch opened in April 1979 — and kept the whimsical name. "Yankee" honors the original shopping plaza stop; "Clipper" references the 19th-century sailing ships renowned for speed and grace. The building's architecture reflects that nautical spirit. Today the branch offers drive-up book drop, study rooms, public computers, printing, Wi-Fi, and Friends of the Library book sales, with free on-site parking.
